Abortion Care

The decision to have an abortion is never easy and can be very isolating. One in three women has had an abortion but few talk about their experience. As a team, we are here to support you. This may be longer-term support or you may just want to talk things through right now.

Abortion Care Dundee

Before an abortion procedure you may feel anxious or alone. You might feel upset about having an abortion at home or you might be relieved that this is possible. Or you may be planning to have the abortion in hospital and are not sure what to expect.

We want to help you as you prepare to think about your emotional wellbeing as well as practical needs. We have prepared an abortion care information page that will give you ideas of what you might need to prepare to have an abortion at home or in hospital.

Our resources page has videos that may help you.

Again, we are here to discuss these things with you if that would be helpful.

After an abortion

It is normal to have a range of emotions after an abortion. These may range from relief to numbness or regret. For some these feelings can be overwhelming, especially if you found it to be a very difficult experience.

Feeling distressed or numb can be upsetting and can cause anxiety. We provide a space where you can piece together what has happened and work out what you feel.

Appointments are available daytimes and evenings and sessions last around 50 minutes. Our service offers telephone, online video or face to face appointments. Our service is free of charge and confidential.

The first step is to arrange an initial appointment. A team member will ask you a few questions, find out a bit more about how things have been and you can also find out more about counselling. After this you will be matched with a counsellor who will get to know you and work with you throughout your time with us. There is currently a wait of about 8 weeks to begin counselling after the initial appointment. To book, you can contact us here or it might feel  easier to call text or email first to find out more.

“thank you, Alternatives, for the service you provide. It is inspirational and truly saved me. I was in a dark place inside my head full sadness guilt and shame. you reminded me how to love myself and for that, I will be forever grateful”
